The answer isn't just "whichever platform has the biggest number." It depends on your business, who you're trying to reach, and what you want the internet to do for you. Here's the real data — and how to read it.
These three numbers already tell a story: most Ugandans with a phone connection are not yet "internet users" in the full sense, and a smaller group again are active on social media specifically. Meanwhile, individual platforms like TikTok and WhatsApp report far higher subscriber counts than that 2.4M figure — because they're measuring something different. We explain exactly why further down this page.
UCC Q2 2026 (April–June 2026), in millions of reported subscriptions. Facebook is excluded from this dataset because it has been under an ongoing government restriction in Uganda, so UCC does not report a subscription figure for it.
Separately, Statcounter's web-traffic data (a different measurement — page views, not subscriptions) shows YouTube holding roughly 42% share of measured page views in Uganda as of August 2026. It isn't shown on the chart above because it isn't the same kind of measurement as the UCC subscription figures.
Discovery and attention through short-form video. Strong for businesses with something visual or entertaining to show.
Visual presentation — fashion, beauty, food, products, finished work. Good for building a brand look.
Reach, community and broad local audience engagement, where accessible.
Direct conversations — enquiries, quotes, order updates, and closing a sale one-on-one.
People actively looking for a business, product or service right now — often the highest-intent channel.
Deeper information, credibility and conversion — the place people go once they're already interested.
Education, demonstrations and longer-form video — explaining something in depth.
Professional and B2B audiences — useful mainly if you sell to other businesses or organizations.
Google, your Google Business Profile, your website, WhatsApp and social media all play different roles. Most businesses don't need to choose one — they need each piece doing the job it's actually good at, working together rather than competing.
Someone sees your TikTok, Instagram post, Google search result, or hears about you by word of mouth.
They check your website or Google Business Profile to see if you're legitimate, what you offer, and whether you're worth their time.
They message you on WhatsApp, call, or fill in a form — this is where interest becomes a conversation.
The conversation turns into a sale, a booking, or a confirmed enquiry.
A similar caution applies to mobile connections (40.9M) versus internet users (11.4M) versus social media identities (2.4M) — each step down measures a narrower, more specific behaviour. And website traffic figures (like Statcounter's page-view shares) measure visits, not people — one person can generate many page views, and the same person can appear in multiple platforms' numbers. Use these figures to understand direction and scale, not as precise headcounts.
